OUR FOODS BECOMING LIKE MANUFACTURED DRUGS

...with negative side effects

Do you remember when it was okay to cook and eat beans with plenty of palm oil? Did it affect our hearts or cause us ill-health? Nooo!

We could use plenty of raw palm oil to eat boiled or roasted yam and freely lick our indigenous palm oil. How then did our indigenous oil -our palm oil become unfriendly to our hearts?

In those days we could even heat the palm oil as much as we wanted and use in making fried sauce with plenty of safe onions, safe tomatoes, safe hot peppers, even use palm oil to fry plantains – dodo!

For Ofada rice, we would fry the locust beans for the sauce with palm oil. Our people ate and bubbled with physical strength and zeal than many people especially youths of today who are often grumpy.

Note: I am not encouraging the heating up of palm oil or any oil or frying of any food because there are healthier methods of cooking. But it is very important to point out that the reasons more and more of our indigenous foods are now being fingered as unhealthy is not because of how they are cooked.

It is actually because of the harmful substances now being used in growing or processing them. If those foods don’t contain harmful substances, even if they are heated up or fried, they won’t damage health.  You may just not  get as much health benefits from them as you would if you use healthier methods of cooking.

Also, if fried, they would take longer to digest. If they do not contain toxic substances, as they digest, they won’t release toxins into your body system. Since digestion of fried foods is slower, they would of course make the person feel very sluggish except it is someone that exercises very well.

But whether you fry the food or not, use any healthy cooking method or not, eat the food fresh, cool, chilled, warm or however, as long as they contain toxins, they will release the toxins into your body. If the toxins in them are such that can easily  pass out of the body i.e. organic compounds, they may cause some discomfort but won’t do too much harm as they leave.

But there are toxins that are hard inorganic substances as  in most chemical pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides, carbides, synthesised elements used in industrial food production, in preservatives etc.

When these latter are ingested  through food; drinks or other means they may  damage the body tissues or organs through which they are to exit the body like the colon, rectum, kidney(s) etc.

Alternatively or in addition, for someone who ingests such regularly, they may accumulate in the body and cause chronic diseases.

If you fry foods containing toxins, the consequences would likely be health hazardous  - better not -  to guard against  such things as cardiac arrest. Exercises may help but as the fried food digests and toxins are released into the body system - ahhh! May the person not slump while exercising.

Even before or without onset of chronic diseases, people who constantly have headaches, other body aches, catarrh, ringing ears (tinnitus), colds, fever need to understand that these are signs of toxins in the system. With treatment, relieve comes but the constant breaking down of the body is a red flag that people shouldn’t take as normal – find out if the foods you regularly eat contain substances that introduce toxins to your body.. We must not take it  as normal that our foods which used to nourish our bodies very well are no longer too good for our health.

An adult is told not to eat egg daily because it contains bad cholesterol.   How did that happen? If poultry is produced without the use of antibiotics, steroids, other drugs and  feeds from raw materials with toxins in them, would the cholesterol in egg be bad or health-challenging?

If rice is produced without arsenic or other chemicals, would rice pose health challenges to people with diabetes, hypertension?

If it’s not that chemicals or synthesised substabces are used in most production and preservation of beans, would we need to soak beans for several hours before cooking and still experience serious inflammation and/or bloating?

Recently, a health practitioner shared the concerns of their client. The client had been taking raw cabbage, cucumber, carrots and some leafy vegetables for a considerable length of time. But in spite of that the person was having a swollen stomach – belly-fat that looked like pregnancy.

Netizens started commenting that too much of  vegetables and fruits is not good – that the dietary fibre in fruits and vegetables have negative side effects. My mouth opened in surprise as I read the comments. When did our fruits and vegetables become like some manufactured drugs  with  negative side effects that you now have to prescribe limits on intake?

Most, if not all manufactured drugs have their base materials from agricultural crops. The reasons they have limits on intake is mainly because during  the industrial production/synthesising, the structure of some substances  may change. The quantity or quantities of the substances must not exceed certain limits per time in the human or even animal body they are applied. If they exceed the limit they would likeky cause very serious harm. Even without exceeding the limit, the person or animal may still experience some side effects from usage.

So guess what? The same principle now applies to our foods being produced with chemicals or synthesised substances. Hence we now hear, ‘You cannot put so much palm oil in your egusi soup.’ Eeehhhnnn! Our own indigenous soup that palm oil would  be flowing like swimming pool?  Why? Simple answer - in the industrial production of many of our indigenous foods that are highly-commercialised, they now use substances like those in the synthesising of manufactured drugs. So like manufactured drugs that need prescription, you now have to be cautious about the quantity of your favourite foodstuffs used in your meals - Shiorrr!.

Palm oil like egg and many of our foods are now being fingered as unhealthy not because they actually are but because  in these modern times due to sophistication that comes with commercialisation, they are mostly produced with substances that pose health hazards to consumers. So like many manufactured drugs  that also have  synthesised substances, many of our local foods now have  negative side effects.

Should our foods that we used to enjoy freely now be like manufactured drugs that we must follow prescription for intake? We must ensure such stops in our food production. But most commercial food producers  sacrifice health-safety to push food produced with chemicals or synthesised elements.

Since these substances were never intended by God the Creator of the human body to be eaten by humans, not even animals, they are damaging to health.

SOLUTIONS
What can we do? Not everyone can produce all the food they need. If you can though, by all means, do. But we can  all start insisting and demanding specifically for organic-grown fresh foods and processed foods devoid of  substances that are toxic to the body (slow poisons if taken regularly). For instance, seek for quality locally-produced palm oil  - unadulterated, devoid of these toxic elements.

Our producers MUST return to producing safe foods so we can eat in peace and not have to worry about our foods damaging our health. If healthy palm oil is available, why can’t we cook it safely and allow it flow in our soups, in our toxins-free beans with toxins-free onions and peppers, in our toxins-free yam pottage or porridge?

If food we eat is free of toxic elements, our bodies would take what is needed and the rest would pass out without damaging our bodies.

Even if you don’t eat much, no matter how little quantity you eat of a food containing toxic substances, the toxins will still do some damage. So it is better to eat foods free of toxins whether you eat little or much
